Curriculum Development

Build Job Curriculums

A curriculum is a collection of courses that teach the skills needed to perform a job. Some of these courses may be required by government mandate, while others require periodic recertification.

A job's curriculum is a list of courses that teach the skills needed to perform that job. In this step, you'll build the curriculum for a job.

Referring to the list of job requirements you created in the previous step, list the courses that the job-holder should take. For each course, identify the following:

  • Is the course required?

  • If more than one course satisfies the requirement, identify which one is preferred.

  • What is the minimum grade to receive credit for this course?

  • After how many days does the course certification expire?

Curriculum Tree

An example of a curriculum tree is shown below. All courses under an "Each of" branch should be taken. An "Either" branch, on the other hand, indicates a choice of courses, with the preferred choice noted. Branches can be nested inside of branches to create multiple levels of choices.

Take both AP1201WB and AP1101.

Take all 3 courses under the Safety Skills group.

Take either AP3501AV or AP3501WB. AP3501AV is the preferred course.

Here a branch is nested inside another branch. Pick one of these options:

-- Take either AP1520PC or AP1520WB.

OR

-- Take both AP1501CL and AP1502CL.

Course Groups

A course group is a collection of related courses, such as the Safety Skills group shown in the previous example. A course group makes it easier to add the same collection of courses to multiple curriculums. You can create course groups for subjects--like Employee Orientation--or for government mandates--such as OSHA Respiratory Protection.
